Brené Brown on Love and vulnerability

Can you imagine a life without loving or being loved?

“Waking up everyday and loving someone who may or may not love us back, whose safety we can’t ensure, who may stay in our lives or may leave without a moment’s notice, who may be loyal to the day they die or betray us tomorrow – that’s vulnerability. Love is uncertain. It’s incredibly risky. And loving someone leaves us emotionally exposed. Yes, it’s scary and yes, we’re open to being hurt, but can you imagine a life without loving or being loved?”

Brené Brown, Daring Greatly

It’s easy to forget what love is. It’s easy to get distracted by the day to day bustle of life and to get lost in the complexities of our feelings and emotions within our relationships. When we feel wronged or misunderstood or  misheard; when we feel afraid and vulnerable, it’s easy to think that something is horribly wrong with our relationship and to fear that love it lost. It would be so nice if love was safe and came with a lifetime guarantee. This quote reminds us that love is the opposite of that.

To love someone is to feel exposed and scared, Brown tells us. Love and vulnerability go hand in hand. They are the essence of what it means to be alive.

Use this quote when you are feeling fearful in your relationship.
